Fibo and EPD: A Sustainable Choice for the Future
The construction industry contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions, and authorities, developers, and end-users alike are increasingly demanding sustainable material choices. Environmental product declarations (EPDs) are used to credibly and comparably document the environmental impact of different products.
What is an EPD?
An EPD is a third-party verified environmental declaration that provides detailed data on a product’s impact on climate, energy, resource use, and waste throughout its life cycle—from raw material extraction to disposal. This enables purchasers, consultants, and developers to make informed decisions based on facts, not assumptions.

Environmental Focus in the Construction Industry
With tightening climate targets and new legislation, such as requirements for carbon footprint accounting in public construction projects, the EPD has become a key tool for meeting sustainability standards. Certifications like BREEAM, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, and public procurement criteria emphasize verified environmental data, not just general environmental claims.
This is a natural area of focus for Fibo, which supplies durable wall systems to homes, schools, and public buildings. By providing EPDs for our products, we make it easier for customers to include Fibo in sustainable building projects and environmental certifications.
“Fibo has clear and verified EPDs that result in a low carbon footprint—especially when compared to traditional materials such as tiles and concrete,” says Anna Schyman, Sustainability Coordinator at BOA Sweden. “When we calculate climate budgets for projects, the difference is clear. It allows us to stay within carbon limits while still offering a high-quality, sustainable alternative.”

EPD in 3 Steps
- Data Collection: Information is gathered about the product’s entire life cycle—from raw material extraction and production to transport, use, and waste handling.
- Analysis: The data is analyzed through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) following international standards (EN 15804 and ISO 14025).
- Verification and Publication: The EPD is verified by an independent third party and published in EPD Norway or another publicly accessible database.
This applies to Fibo’s bathroom panels and wall systems, including products used in wet rooms and fire-rated environments. Thus, our customers can easily document their environmentally conscious choices.

Product Comparison
One of the biggest advantages of EPDs is that they enable comparison between different products on an equal basis. For example, our EPD shows that Fibo wall panels have up to 50% lower greenhouse gas emissions than traditional solutions such as ceramic tiles and cement-based boards.
Since Fibo’s products also generate less construction waste and require fewer materials during installation, the overall environmental impact is lower in both new construction and renovations. The EPD thus provides both us and our customers with a clear, measurable tool for making greener choices.
